#Palestine / Macron: We will recognize a Palestinian state

A news brief on #Ynet (AFP) says French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will recognize a Palestinian state in June during a conference to be held with Saudi Arabia in New York. "We must move forward toward recognition, and therefore in the coming months we will do so," he said.

[cont’d] Same incident reported in #Haaretz:

Headline

Palestinian woman shot dead in the West Bank after throwing stones at Israeli vehicles; IDF: She tried to stab soldiers

Text

A Palestinian woman threw stones at IDF forces and Israeli vehicles at the Giti Avishar junction in the West Bank and was shot dead. The IDF reported that she also tried to stab soldiers at the scene before she was shot, and that no additional people were injured.

1. Haaretz correctly identifies her as a "Palestinian woman" rather than a "female terrorist"

2. The report directly states she was "shot dead" rather than using the term "neutralized" (terminology #Ynet used intentionally and regularly to broadcast an imminent threat justifying the killing)

3. The report presents the stabbing attempt as an IDF claim ("IDF: She tried to stab soldiers") rather than a confirmed fact

4. Ynet's headline emphasized the knife being found in her possession, while Haaretz includes the stabbing attempt as an IDF statement in the context of the report

Hebrew haaretz.co.il/news/politics/wa or archive.is/JOwGB

Terrorism according to Israeli media, #Ynet.

When not busy scavenging stories from social media about #antisemitism for their rolling coverage titled "wave of antisemitism" (mostly ultra-orthodox Jews complaining about not getting something they felt entitled to), Ynet is "reporting" (IDF briefings) about terrorist activities, including children and women throwing stones at unsuspecting, fragile soldiers who are left with no choice other than to “neutralize” them.

The text in Hebrew says:

Fighters neutralized a female terrorist who was throwing stones in the Shomron, a knife was found in her possession.

IDF forces neutralized a female terrorist who was throwing stones at the Giti Avishar junction in Shomron. During the search, a knife was found in her possession.

(Elisha Ben Kimon)

This is not the definition of terrorist or terrorism. Yet Ynet is regularly choosing to use the term “מחבל" (terrorist) to describe Palestinians. The labeling of stone-throwing as terrorism and the individual as a terrorist represents a particular narrative about resistance activities in the occupied territories. The report also emphasizes that a knife was found in her possession after the fact, which serves to further justify the characterization and response.

[cont'd] Quoting Ariel Muzicant (European Jewish Congress President): "The motivation of extreme right politicians to come to this conference is not the love for Israel or to protect the Jews, but mainly to get a kosher rabbi stamp,"

European Jewish Congress President Ariel Muzicant has strongly condemned Israeli "Diaspora Affairs" Minister Amichai Chikli for inviting far-right European politicians to an anti-#antisemitism conference, calling it "a stab in the back" to Jewish communities.

According to (right-wing) #JerusalemPost report, prominent Jewish leaders including UK Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis have withdrawn from the March 26-27 event over the inclusion of figures like Jordan #Bardella from #France's National Rally and representatives from parties with histories of antisemitism.

"The motivation of extreme right politicians to come to this conference is not the love for Israel or to protect the Jews, but mainly to get a kosher rabbi stamp," Muzicant wrote, warning that far-right movements often oppose values essential for Jewish survival in Europe.

jpost.com/diaspora/antisemitis

According to (center-right) #Ynet, Muzicant stated that the four largest Jewish organizations in the world – #AJC, #EJC, #WJC, and #CER (the World, European, American Jewish organizations, and the Conference of European Rabbis) – will also boycott the conference.

[cont’d] Ynet’s report (Itamar Eichner editorializing news agencies reports, with the help of Moran Azoulay):

Unlike the #Haaretz article, which provided more detailed descriptions of the allegations and evidence while still including Israeli responses, the #Ynet article primarily functions as a platform for official Israeli denials while minimizing the substantive content of the UN report itself.

Very typical editorialized “reporting” in ynet includes:

Delegitimization through quotation marks: the article places quotation marks around terms like "experts" ("מומחים") when referring to the #UN investigators, suggesting their expertise is questionable.

Focus on Israeli responses: approximately half the article is dedicated to Israeli officials' responses, including extensive quotes from #Netanyahu and #Gantz, while providing minimal details about the actual findings.

Emphasis on committee bias: the article repeatedly emphasizes the alleged anti-Israel bias of the Human Rights Council without engaging with the substance of the evidence presented.

Contextual redirection: the article redirects attention to #Hamas's October 7 attacks and alleged sexual violence, implying a false equivalence and shifting focus away from examining the specific allegations against Israeli forces.

Ad hominem approach: rather than addressing the methodology or evidence presented in the report, the article focuses on criticizing committee chair Navi Pillay as "anti-Israeli" ("אנטי-ישראלית").

Also missing:

Specific evidence: Ynet omits almost all references to the evidence presented in the UN report, particularly the approximately twenty videos and photographs documenting alleged abuses. There is no mention of specific video evidence, such as the Telegram channel footage from Ofer prison.

Detailed testimonies: the article excludes the specific testimonies from victims that were central to the UN report, including accounts of physical sexual assault, threats of rape, and the specific question reportedly asked by a soldier: "How do you want us to be raped? One by one or all together?"

#Palestine / Israeli news site #Ynet outraged Sky News mentions that four Palestinian “prisoners” released by Israel are in critical condition

news.sky.com/story/gaza-hostag

In another item, labeling released Palestinians as “terrorists”, without being specific about charges, Ynet reported that the Prison Service changed the clothing of the detainees being released, dressing them in tracksuits with a Star of David and the Prison Service logo, alongside the text: "We will not forget and we will not forgive."

In some of the previous phases, the detainees were made to wear bracelets with the Prison Service’s text—and in addition, they were shown a film about the destruction in the Gaza Strip.

#Germany #GenocideWhitewash / Free University surrenders to Israel’s pressure to cancels event featuring UN Special rapporteur on Palestine

The Free University of Berlin canceled an in-person event featuring UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine Francesca Albanese, citing "polarisation and the unpredictable security situation". The university's president, Gunter Ziegler, suggested the event be held online instead. Albanese recently described Israeli practices in the West Bank as "criminal" and warned of "genocidal intent".

middleeastmonitor.com/20250213

#Ynet is reporting that the mayor of #Berlin, Kai Wegner, a staunch supporter of #Israel, called for the cancellation of the lecture, as did Ron Prosor, the Israeli ambassador to Germany. "If Albanese speaks at your place," Prosor wrote to Ziegler, "it will be a disgrace to your institution, to the academic community and to the city of Berlin. Instead of confronting hate, you are giving it a platform."

Albanese said this recently:

[…] Whoever speaks about human rights, but remains silent about Palestine, is talking about privileges, not principles.

#US / Israeli Postdoc sues UC Berkeley Student Union, Alleging anti-Semitic discrimination

Karin Yaniv, an Israeli postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley, has filed a federal lawsuit against her graduate student union, alleging that the union has created a hostile work environment for Israeli Jews.

Yaniv claims the union's actions, which she characterizes as anti-Semitic, violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the California state law. The complaint details numerous instances of alleged discrimination, including the union making anti-Israel statements, supporting anti-Israel protests and the #BDS movement, and marginalizing Jewish union members. Yaniv seeks a court order to stop the alleged discrimination, require anti-discrimination training, and award damages. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Yaniv is represented by the Fairness Center. #Ynet published this story today with a typical hyperbolic "culture of anti-Semitism" in the headline, forgetting to explain to their readers that the so-called "Fairness Center" is a right-wing litigation center that primarily pursues anti-union litigation. It offers free legal aid to those allegedly harmed by public employee union officials. Nothing to do with anti-Semitism, it seems, rather union-busting.

Another interesting passage, which highlights the challenges Israeli journalists face in verifying and reporting on events in Gaza due to limited access and reluctance from Gazans to speak with Israeli media.

[…] "You have no way to verify it. He [refering to journalist Wael Hamdan Ibrahim Al-Dahdouh, which killed most his family members of including his son, who was also a journalist] doesn’t want to talk to you either, and almost no one else wants to talk to you. The only ones we’ve managed to bring on from Gaza are a #UNRWA spokesperson—every time we bring him on, people don’t like it, but I don’t mind that they don’t like it—his perspective is just limited; and some poor resident from Rafah, Sami Obeid, whom we initially called a journalist because he once wrote something, but he’s not a journalist, he’s a resident. He’s a resident of Rafah, and he tells you what happened because he’s willing to answer an Israeli phone call and join on Zoom. So our ability to objectively provide something, to explicitly say, 'Today something terrible happened'... it’s also very difficult."

Some outlets, such as #Ynet, have occasionally featured Sami Obeid as evidence of opposition to Hamas without fully disclosing his background or clarifying that his views are personal and not representative.

#Ynet's daily inflammatory discourse when reporting on Palestinians involved in... well, anything.

In this article, Ynet's editors chose to use the term "terrorism" in the headline (in quotes, supposedly quoting a grieving family member), in a report which describes the vandalism of military graves by two East Jerusalem teenagers (13). But the facts presented do not support the terrorism label at all. While authorities arrested the suspects, they were later released to house arrest, with some police sources indicating the incident was treated as juvenile misconduct rather than terrorism.

Why let such an easy clickbait go to waste?

While genocidal speech seems to be tolerable to #ynet’s moderators, Naomi Klein is way too dangerous. I believe that this translation to Hebrew is automatically removed by their system.

It’s a translation of this quote:

[…] It’s a simple fable of good and evil, in which Israel is unblemished in its innocence, deserving unquestioning support, while its enemies are all monsters, deserving of violence unbounded by laws or borders, whether in Gaza, Jenin, Beirut, Damascus or Tehran. It’s a story in which Israel’s very identity as a nation is forever fused with the terror it suffered on 7 October, an event that, in Netanyahu’s telling, will be seamlessly merged both with the Nazi Holocaust and a battle for the soul of western civilization.
