Watched the comedy "North of North" yesterday. It's a very nice #TVSeries with many interesting & likeable characters and It seems (through comments I read) very representative of the community.

"A young Inuk woman in a tiny Arctic village strives to forge her own path, defying societal expectations and gossip in her tightknit community."

If you're looking for something new to watch, you definitely should have a look.

From Alex Usher for people in the network of @NunavutBirder "As an aside here, I would really love it if someone from Nunavut could write an explainer about the politics of the national Inuit organization trying to start a post-secondary institution that will almost certainly overlap with and duplicate programming at the already mind-bogglingly expensive, territorially-controlled Nunavut Arctic College. Please and thank you." #nunavut #inuit #canPol

Besonders betroffen sind indigene Gemeinschaften in #Grönland und #Nunavut, für die etwa #Robbenfleisch ein zentrales Nahrungsmittel ist.

Le Monde · The invisible poison threatening Arctic communitiesBy Juliette Pavy

Fashion in ‘North of North’ has generated a lot of comment in social media.

I’ve noticed that many of these come with assumptions about what women would be wearing in Inuit communities, and a lack of understanding of the importance of sustainable design in Inuit culture.

CBC has a great feature with interviews with the show’s creators on the point.

‘The show's emphasis on slow fashion ran counter to a film industry that often operates on a quicker schedule.

"Nothing here is mass-made," Aglok MacDonald said. "So it really is going out to independent artists who are just crafting a few things here and there and seeing if they could put in a bulk order."’

North of North has dropped on Netflix today.

It’s an absolute joy of a show that looks misogyny, settler paternalism and intergenerational trauma directly in the eye but still leaves one feeling delighted, cheering on Siaja’s journey as a young ‘modern Inuk woman’ episode by episode.

A CBC-ATPN coproduction with Netflix, it ran weekly on CBC Gem earlier this year in Canada.

It deserves all the viewing minutes globally.

Starting a rewatch is what I needed this week.

Was pleasantly surprised to see the BBC giving an Indigenous woman more words in this story.

"On one of these annual 186-mile (300km) journeys, Ms Kabloona's grandmother went into labour and gave birth to her father in a tent along the way.

"Two days later, she got up and carried on walking," Ms Kabloona said.

"She did that in every single one of her pregnancies, traversed our land, because that is our way of life and always has been."”

"Show respect to the land and the people who have kept it pristine for your adventures."
