Columbia Will Pay Survivors of Abusive Doctor $750 Million After ProPublica Revealed University’s Failures
—
The sweeping deal means the Ivy League school’s settlements will total more than $1 billion for over 1,000 claims of sexual abuse by former patients of OB-GYN Robert Hadden, who worked at the university for 20 years despite decades of complaints.
The UN is calling for the US to respect right of its own citizens to protest, in response to police crackdown on student protesters Columbia yesterday. Says people have the right to criticize any government, including Israel.
It was developed by Conor Fennessy, a staff member in #ElonMusk’s #DOGE, acc/to 2 people w/direct knowledge of the plan. Similar lists of grant eliminations are being developed in other parts of the Dept of the #Interior….
At the #NPS, the DOGE plan proposes eliminating #ScientistsInParks, a popular program that places #students & early-career #scientists at natural & historic landmarks to help protect #ecosystems.
Our #students have once again rated us very highly in the latest CHE #UniversityRankings! Around 120,000 students from German-speaking #universities evaluated the quality of teaching and study conditions in their #degreeprograms: http://go.tum.de/192018

How are you giving students the skills to spot fake news?
There has never been a more urgent time in human history to look at information and language critically and students appreciate how relevant these skills are to their lives.

Wow! A stunning read - thank you so much for formulating & sharing this & all power to your students & yourself. This resonates so loud & clear:
“I think no one really wants to have a whole generation of people who know how to fake it and phone it in and debate me bro but no idea what they're talking about. I truly believe that the students we graduate who actually read and think and write for themselves will stand out like floodlights, and will likely… be the ones who can pursue anything they want. But the gamble they are taking is reading and thinking and then being led by a generation of zombies, and it scares them.”
They will be floodlights as you are.
#Trump, a [purely self-interested] #Republican, is also trying to #deport some pro-Palestinian #international #students at #US #schools, saying their presence could *harm* US #ForeignPolicy interests [utter crap].
The #protesters in the library also demanded the release of #MahmoudKhalil, a #Palestinian activist & #Columbia graduate student who remains in a Louisiana immigrant #jail after he was among the first to be #arrested for #deportation.
The #university said 34 #protesters were #arrested, & charges of trespassing, property destruction & disorderly conduct were referred to prosecutors.
On Wed, it said the 21 #students who were among those arrested have been #suspended & #banned from all of the school's campuses.
#Columbia was at the forefront of a pro-#Palestinian & anti-war student #protest movement that swept across US campuses last year over #Israel's war in #Gaza, which began in 2023.
An #NYPD spox confirmed "multiple arrests" of #protesters who occupied the library but did not provide an exact number.
Before police arrived, #Columbia #University public safety personnel were seen locking the front doors to the library, preventing any more #students from entering the building & sparking a brief episode of pushing & shoving outside.
One student appeared to have been injured in the fracas. Another individual was seen being carried out of the bldg on a stretcher.
≧40–50 #students, their hands cuffed w/plastic zip-ties, were seen being loaded into #NYPD vans & buses outside #ButlerLibrary as officers swept through 6 six-story bldg to round up other #protesters who refused to leave.
#Police arrived on campus in force at the request of #Columbia ofcls who said the student demonstrators occupying the library's 2nd-floor main reading room were engaged in trespassing.
Dozens of #students arrested in pro-#Palestinian #protest at #ColumbiaUniversity
#Police #arrested dozens of #Columbia students who seized part of the school's main library on Wednesday in one of the biggest pro-Palestinian #demonstrations on campus since last year's wave of protests against #Israel's #war in #Gaza.

Aside from one very oblique reference to congressional hearings about #antisemitism (“the great work of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik”), the letter is silent on the subject. The #Trump admin is no longer pretending that it is standing up for #Jewish #students. The project has been revealed for what it is: an effort to punish liberal institutions for the crime of being #liberal.
Many #students & #faculty justifiably feel that these #schools failed to take #harassment of #Jews seriously enough during the protests that erupted after the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack on #Israel by #Hamas. By centering its critique on that issue, the #Trump admin was cannily appropriating for its own ends one of the progressive left’s highest priorities: protecting a minority from hostile acts.
Now, however, the mask is off.
Students at participating K-12, Adult Schools and Community Colleges can enjoy the freedom of going anywhere, anytime for FREE on Metro buses and trains.
After spending the better part of the past 2 yrs grading #AI-generated papers, Troy Jollimore, a poet, philosopher, & Cal State Chico #ethics professor, has concerns. “Massive numbers of #students are going to emerge from #university w/degrees, & into the workforce, who are essentially #illiterate,” he said. “Both in the literal sense & in the sense of being historically illiterate & having no knowledge of their own culture, much less anyone else’s.”
Less than 3 months later, teaching a course called #Ethics & #ArtificialIntelligence, Green figured a low-stakes reading reflection would be safe—surely no one would dare use #ChatGPT to write something personal.
But one of his #students turned in a reflection w/ robotic language & awkward phrasing that Green knew was #AI-generated.
Sarah, a freshman at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, said she first used #ChatGPT to cheat during the spring semester of her final year of high school. (Sarah’s name, like all other current #students in this article, is changed for privacy.) After getting acquainted w/the #chatbot, Sarah used it for all her classes: Indigenous studies, law, English, & a “hippie farming class”called Green Industries. “My grades were amazing,” she said. “It changed my life.”

Generative-#AI #chatbots — #ChatGPT but also #Google’s #Gemini, #Anthropic’s #Claude, #Microsoft’s #Copilot, & others — take their notes during class, devise their study guides & practice tests, summarize novels & textbooks, & brainstorm, outline, & draft their essays. #STEM #students are using AI to automate their #research & data #analyses & to sail through dense #coding & debugging assignments.
#Professors & #teaching assistants increasingly found themselves staring at essays filled with clunky, robotic phrasing that, though grammatically flawless, didn’t sound quite like a #college student — or even a human. 2½ years later, #students at large state #schools, the Ivies, liberal-arts schools in New England, #universities abroad, professional schools, & community colleges are relying on #AI to ease their way through every facet of their #education.
