#Spring really has opened up here in #WNC. Three different plants, showing their colors today.

A brilliant red Knock-Out rose manages to get some sun, and open completely. The leaves are green and not yet full of bugs, but that will come soon, as I don't spray, and they are mostly in the shade. I think they will have a new home soon, but glad to see the blooms.

A pink K-O rose, and quite a large bloom, with an unopened bud above it, surrounded by the green leaves of the bush, and one already-blown flower remainder. I don't think this one was in the sun. It's a very deep pink, and this bush has more than one or two blooms.

The traditional foundation plant in this community in #WNC, the purple rhododendron, quite the torch when it catches fire (and apparently they are dangerous to breathe if burned, too.)

They are, however, absolutely gorgeous this time of year, when the duckpin bowling ball-sized blossoms open, like this one. Each blossom is made up of dozens of what look just like individual azalea blossoms, all in a globe. The dark green leaves of the bush are a bit spiky, and jut out from around the flowers themselves.

I know I post the same picture every year, but can't resist when they first open in taking more.

Another screencap of the area around us in WNC, shows a wide range of colors, from light green blobs (good) to dark purple (very bad.) Seven fires in the area and slight, changeable breezes are making this a mess for everyone.

I've lived in WNC for more than 30y. Never seen anything like this. Pack a bag NOW. Medications, irreplaceables, important documents. Get pet carriers ready. Keep gas in your car.

The fact that we survived one disaster doesn't mean we won't have to survive another, and the authorities didn't learn the lessons they should have. If anything, they are LESS prepared now. Take care of yourself.

TL;DR: Asheville and WNC, be ready to evac and don't rely on local govs or the media.

Not to be alarmist, but I learned some lessons from Helene, and they're being confirmed now: City/county government and local media WILL NOT alert you in time to act if there's an emergency. You're in charge. And it's time to take that seriously, because these fires are no joke.

Woke up smelling smoke inside the house (windows closed). Had to go outside to make sure there was not a fire right near the house. Don’t see anything. But this is the worst air quality I’ve ever been in - even in the worst Oregon wildfires. The fires from the north and west of us are delivering their poisons.

Finally an update on yesterday’s fire in #Tryon #NC. All evacuations from yesterday remain in place with the addition of Harmon Field (staging area). Only a “small amount” is contained, and fire is staged at 400-500 acres as of this morning. No injuries, no loss of structures known. Apparently high winds yesterday knocked down a power line. With the red flag warnings here in #WNC and all of the storm debris lying around, it would seem like in a more normal time that we'd be beginning to see something like Watch Duty for this area. This isn't going to be a one-off, I fear.

Right now it's an absolute black hole for information.
