As much as I like @fedora must admit no major version upgrade comes smooth :ablobcatcry:

This time, upgrading to Fedora v42 has weirdest issue on bootup when it asks for LUKS decryption phrase: it asks once, then attempts to boot, and then asks again, however, neither laptop nor external keyboard inputs anything.

So I loaded Kernel of Fedora v41 (all smooth with it) and when booted reinstalled Kernel:

sudo dnf reinstall kernel\*

Interestingly, it helped - after choosing 6.14.4-300.fc42.x86_64 Kernel, it asked for LUKS passphrase input, accepted it, then briefly flashed again (oh no, I thought!), but dialog disappeared and session manager loaded up.

There is always so much stress when upgrading :fedora: major version... :blobcatfearful:

Fedora Magazine · The answer is 42! Fedora Linux 42, that is. - Fedora MagazineFedora Linux 42 is officially released. Thank you so much to everyone who works so hard on Fedora and in all of our upstream projects.

Owning a Macbook Air now means I can repurpose the laptop (that I WAS going to make my primary #Windows mobile workstation for regular computer stuff) into a Linux one for play. The question is, do I go with #nixos/#nixbook or #fedora42 plasma - the latter is something I just have been wanting to install forever because it's stable and well respected. But then so is Mint. But then I've already "done" Mint. But then.. god.

@codemonkeymike CONVINCE ME of something here. Which DE is nixbook?

OK so, I think I got confused on the #fedora website. Turns out I downloaded #Fedora42 Plasma KDE. Which has worked out well for the user.

Although, a bit fussy in the user interface. I would have preferred Gnome.

But on review, it looks like I was confused by the word "Workstation". I ignored that option because I didn't want some RedHat official thing for offices.

I'm about to install #Fedora42 on a neighbours new computer.

I know, I'm a glutton for support complexity.

But I think, having tried a bunch of OSes last year, while I didn't personally like Fedora for some specific reasons. It seemed really stable and suitable for end users compared to many Debian based systems that seemed to be falling all over themselves recently.

Maybe it's money. Perhaps it's organisation. not sure.

Wish me luck!

I hate to say it but #F42 has been glitchy.

daily instances where I'm thinking "that didn't used to happen" like delays when pushing the power button to get it to sleep, and rendering artifacts around windows. not easily reproducible things.

Why does this feel worse than #F41? #Fedora #Fedora42

(for the record I gave it a few update cycles before saying anything)

Once I adapted to new muscle memory, having the dash hidden really improved my work flow.

Overview mode not only allows me to access the dash, but it also unifies the experience of all the different work-spaces. This is just not as unified when the dock is integrated into the workspace itself (like GNOME 2).

Jury is out whether I'll use Dash to Dock or standard GNOME, but it's great to have the freedom to find out. 🙂

"One of" the best features of GNOME (which I REALLY like), is how well it supports extensions. They don't behave like they're bolted on, but feel seamlessly integrated.

And one of the most popular (and best) extension happens to be Dash to Dock, which puts the Dash up onto the work space, so we don't have to press the super key, etc, to reveal it. I love using it.

But just to play devil's advocate, I want to to do a shout out to good ole' vanilla GNOME 3.

Just upgraded to #Fedora42 and everything survived (I have a weird NVIDIA container toolkit / CUDA install), well everything except R-CRAN-arrow, which I already knew was going to give me problems `cause I already upgraded one of my laptops.

And what's kind of amazing.... they included the forking app notifier/status extension!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!!!!!!!! Finally
