This piece is inspired by the fairytale, Jack and the Beanstalk.

Jack’s tale has had a lot of iterations, and it has shifted and changed over time to omit different elements depending on the era in which the tale is being told.

A lot of folks consider Jack to be a thug, a simple irresponsible child burglar, but one important fact that is often left out of the tale is the nature of the Giant that ultimately gets killed. Few know that the Grimm’s version clearly states that the Giant is not liked in his cloud kingdom and has stolen most of his treasures from others. And the fact that his bedroom is littered with bones of the victims he’s eaten doesn’t say much for him either.

So is Jack actually an irresponsible kid? Or might he be considered a type of Robin Hood, evening the odds and dishing out the Karma that the Giant deserves?

Hm.

this piece is based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It’s done in an Art Nouveau style heavily influenced by one of my art heroes, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.

It is completely Human-Made with out the “assistance” of any artificial generative nonsense. It was done entirely in Procreate, and took 6543 strokes over 8 hours and 40 minutes of working time.

I have it listed as a single greeting card available on my Goimagine Handmade Shop: https://goimagine.com/goldilocks-and-the-three-bears-single-illustrated-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

Hôtel van Eetvelde is a historic #ArtNouveau townhouse in #Brussels, designed by Victor Horta for Edmond van Eetvelde. It was built between 1895 and 1898 and stood out for its innovative use of industrial materials like steel and glass.
The interior of Hôtel van Eetvelde centers around an octagonal rotunda topped by a skylight, reconstructed in 1988 following Horta’s original design.

I call this piece “Tradition”.

It’s a comment on the power of peer pressure from dead people.

I like some traditions, but the ones that inflict judgement or the ones that self-justify themselves because “this is the way it has always been” can be quite dangerous and unhealthy to some. Tradition can be wielded like a cudgel to deny things simply out of spite and hate or fear or convenience.

Tradition can regulate behavior in ways that are illogical and demeaning. It can pre-determine choices and restrict freedoms.

It can be a tool to generate fear.

There are far too many bad traditions, and I am a firm believer in the power of change. That people can be better humans and turn away from harmful traditions when they want or need to. The human capacity to make their own choices is valuable, and implies we have agency. That we can rise above our circumstance.

This was the very very first piece I did after finding the work of Frances Macdonald McNair, who led me to discovering the Glasgow Four and their Scottish take on Art Nouveau. I then started contemplating the work of Charles “Rennie” Mackintosh.

I’ve always been enamored of the work of Pamela Zagarenski, too, and her capacity to collage texture. This image was a nod to her as well.

This piece was an exploration of textures and abstracted composition. I called it “Red ala Rennie”, and I worked to sort of reference the fairytale, Little Red Riding hood. I ended up making it a greeting card that you can find here:

Here’s the livestream recording of when it was made. I was in a dour mood and frustrated that I wasn’t putting much of myself into my art but simply “transcribing” reference imagery from photos. This was a huge HUGE step toward me embracing my own instincts and leaning into what I wanted to do.

Girl Blowing Bubbles is a delicate artwork attributed to Luis Masriera, a renowned Spanish artist and jeweler active in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Masriera, famous for his Art Nouveau jewelry, often captured ethereal, dreamlike subjects in both his jewelry and paintings. This particular work reflects the playful innocence and fleeting beauty that were central themes in the Art Nouveau movement.
