After floating the Sacramento River with my son, I couldn’t resist photographing the Sundial Bridge—but not in the usual way.

This is a deep infrared shot at 830nm, far beyond visible light. No color here—just bold contrast, black skies, white foliage, and the dramatic elegance of Calatrava’s design cutting across the frame.

The Sundial Bridge is more than beautiful—it’s functional and environmentally sensitive. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2004, it spans the river without disturbing the salmon below. Its 217-ft pylon doubles as a sundial and supports the entire structure via cable-stay, all while looking like a piece of modern sculpture.

While floating the Sacramento River with my son, I had to photograph the iconic Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA. Since it’s so often photographed, I also shot it with my infrared gear. This 830nm black-and-white image reveals deep black skies and bright white clouds and foliage—well beyond the visible spectrum. The high clouds (likely contrails) made a nice sky for this dramatic capture. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2004, the 700-foot pedestrian bridge spans the river without touching it, protecting salmon habitat. Its 217-foot inclined pylon supports a cable-stay design and functions as the gnomon of a working sundial, accurate one day per year. The glass deck minimizes environmental impact and looks sleek. The bridge resembles Calatrava’s Puente del Alamillo in Spain, earning it the nickname “sister bridge” and highlighting Calatrava’s blend of art, engineering, and ecology.

📷 Hay fotos que he hecho mil veces. Es el caso del Palau de les Arts. Paso por allí cada pocos días y a menudo cae alguna foto. El edificio es espectacular, sí, pero creo que ya lo he fotografiado desde todos los ángulos... Así que solo me queda jugar con el procesado. Esta foto es de 2013. Ahora me avergüenzo un poco de los procesados agresivos de aquella época, pero en su día me gustaban 😅

Vusta frontal del Palau de les Arts (València). Se trata de un edificio con forma de casco con una cubierta superior que parece flotar. Predomina el hormigón blanco recubierto de fragmentos de azulejos (trencadis) también blancos. Desde este punto de vista, parece un casco en el suelo. El casco de Darth Vader o un stormtrooper, con una rejilla a la altura de la boca (en reali, uno de los mirdores acristalados del edificio). El procesado resalta el contraste y los tonos azules y dorados, dándole dramatismo a la imagen.
