Wau the #immich photo portal is good. I just tried the remote machine learning functionality on GPU box I got to play with. Now the portal finds the people by their faces from the library. Even this where the face is distorted in amusement park bending mirrors.
Lastly, I have #immich in a #proxmox VM as a readonly viewer of the samba share so I can see photos on my phone and other devices. My devices connect to #wireguard when out of the house so they can still access the server to sync!
Hope that is helpful to someone, and let me know what I'm doing wrong and can improve!

Funziona!
After a re-setup of my #homelab server with #truenas I finally have #nextcloud up and running again.
In the past I used Nextcloud Photos to backup my phone but now moved to #immich. Now finally can also move all my #googlephotos to my private cloud
Just triggered the export of the photos ;-)
Again one small stepp away from google and co!

@smoltron I have only very low power CPUs at home. Except the son's ps5. According to docs #immich sends only preview images to remote machine learning, perhaps it would work to use the #OpenShift AI cluster from datacenter to run the mass recognition once. Or perhaps just easier to bring home some laptop with GPU for a day. Need to think a bit. But Immich was super nice find!
Would be cool if one could hook up ps5 to #immich to use the GPU for image machine learning. Unfortunately I don't have another GPU at home. I suppose VPN to datacenter for accessing serious GPUs would be a bit slow and overkill :)
Wau. #Immich is super nice. I don't even have used GPU yet to find faces and duplicates. But it's very slick and the map fearure is nice. Of course the initial image import is slow on raspi (ffmpeg) but UI is slick. Now I need to figure out which machine to use for GPU tasks.
Ok. #immich installed on rasperry pi 4 running #microshift #k8s. Now what? Will raspi be beefy enough to run it? No GPU at least. Need to try how to use the external lib mounted to pod over nfs from nas. Redis and posgresql on the same raspi k8s.
Successfully got #immich installed on my NAS; my phone's currently backing up to it.
Next week: investigate bulk-loading my existing photos.
#selfhosting upgrading #nexctloud and #immich.
Continuing a winning streak of successful upgrades of community based FOSS continues.
BTW: IPng has voluntarily bought a license for #immich to support the project.
You should support your local self-hosted non-big-tech supplier (including Mastodon)!
I'm pretty sure #google makes their apps less sophisticated at least partly to hide the scale of the data they're collecting.
I say this because in #immich, which is a #selfhosted photo app, I have exact geolocation of where I took all my pictures. In Google Photos there's a vague "in this country" but no option to overlay photos on Google Maps. Too dystopian?
This week in #FDroid (TWIF) is live:

* #OrganicMaps freed from proprietary forges
* #Ente hits 1.0

* Goodtime makes #pomodoro easy

And Immich performs amazingly with the M1 chip on Fedora. Everything loads instantly on mobile, videos stream immediately - super snappy.
#immich
Success!!! I've migrated Immich from an x86 Debian system to Asahi Fedora on an M1 Mac Mini.
Installing Fedora was easy
Installing Docker was easy.
Installing Tailscale was super simple.
Installing and setting up CSF was easy, but only because I had notes from last time on how to make Docker and Tailscale cooperate.
Migrating the Immich database was a nightmare!! I think because my old system was a mishmash of legacy settings from 100+ releases ago... Also, my old system wasn't on the very newest release, which in itself made migration fail initially.

If you are going to copy your photos from Google Photos to Immich, remember that it will take some time!
I have ~300k photos and videos.
Downloading ~1.4T of Takeout took 2 days.
Copying and unzipping these on my debian box took about half a day.
Importing using immich-go took a day.
And immich is still running background jobs a day later.
#GooglePhotos #immich #SelfHosting
(most annoying: a) why did I use tgz over zip? b) restarting those failed takeout downloads every now and again)
