This is an expecially good time to be around #XMPP
#profanity and #poezio were recently updated, while #gajim (and soon #converse.js) got a new major release. These are all #XMPP clients, if you're not familiar with those names: first 2 are console-based, while gajim is a desktop client and converse.js is a web client.
Even #Movim (web client) will have another big release soon, supporting #audio #video #calls and #screensharing.. Want to give it a go?
"So long as Western societies cling to their chaotically unhealthy attitudes toward sex, the swearer will never want for four-letter words."
—Ashley Montagu, The Anatomy of Swearing
Why we swear like a trooper, trucker, sailor, fishwife.
Updated my @stronglang post with notes from Ashley Montagu's 1967 book The Anatomy of Swearing:
https://stronglang.wordpress.com/2022/12/11/trooper-trucker-sailor-fishwife-what-we-swear-like-when-we-swear-like-a-something/
Montagu's book devotes one long chapter to the peculiar history of the word "bloody", which, he writes, "accumulated so much magic that it provided an unfailing source of energy for use in all sorts of refined meanings."
Reading this. It's a lot of fun, if you're into swearing, insults, and literary history
Profanity is a console based XMPP client written in C using ncurses and libstrophe, inspired by Irssi

"There is something intuitively palliative about end-of-life profanity."

Am I right, that the last two points, i.e. better multi-device and encryption experiences, derive from Delta Chat using #PGP instead of #PFS-polluted #OMEMO?
Unfortunately, #OX (#OpenPGP for #XMPP) doesn't take off. Only few #Jabber clients (#Gajim, #Libervia, #Profanity) support it, esp. no mobile client so far.
Oh, how I envy Delta Chat users for having encryption without cursed #forwardSecrecy!
In honor of the excellent discussion started by @TheBreadmonkey about whether it is okay to swear on #mastodon
